See Jonah Preach

In this message, Pastor Stephen Davey opens with a pointed warning about the spiritual "junk food" being served in many churches today, arguing that lasting revival comes only through the faithful exposition of God's Word rather than creative topics and superficial teaching. Turning to Jonah 3, Pastor Davey marvels at the grace embedded in the phrase "the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time," using it to celebrate God's character as a God of second chances who restores and reenlists even His most disobedient servants. He observes that God's renewed commission to Jonah carried an implicit warning: rather than capitalizing on his extraordinary fish story, Jonah was charged to set aside his own remarkable testimony and deliver God's message alone to the people of Nineveh. Pastor Davey also presents a fascinating archaeological case that the Ninevites were uniquely prepared to receive Jonah's message, given that their chief deity Dagon was a fish god — making a prophet delivered by a great fish a particularly compelling and sovereignly orchestrated messenger. He concludes that God's ancient method of bringing reformation and awakening has never changed — it still works through willing men and women who faithfully deliver His Word, trusting that the power of the gospel will accomplish what only God can do.
